Ava DuVernay to Adapt ‘DAWN’ as a TV Series

Ava DuVernay, Charles D. King and Victoria Mahoney will adapt Octavia E. Butler’s DAWN as a TV series.

Dawn, a classic 1987 science fiction novel by the Nebula and Hugo Award-winnnig author, will be adapted by Mahoney about an African-American woman who works with aliens to resurrect the human race 250 years after a nuclear war.

King and DuVernay will executive produce. Kim Roth, Poppy Hanks, Allen Bain, Gary Pearl, Thomas L. Carter and Teddy Smith will executive produce. King’s Macro, Forward Movement, Oil & Cattle and Bainframe will produce.

Butler is a prolific author who uses the genre of sci-fi to address issues such as race, gender and hierarchy and many others. She was the first writer in the genre to be awarded the MacArthur Fellowship aka the Genius Grant in 1995.
