Alfre Woodard to Play Simba’s Mother in Disney’s ‘LION KING’ Live-Action

Luke Cage star Alfre Woodard has joined the cast of Disney’s upcoming live-action THE LION KING as Sabari, Simba’s mother. In the original 1994 animated classic, it was voiced by Madge Sinclaire. The film is currently shooting in Los Angeles.

Lion King joins the latest live-action versions Disney is making based on their animated classics, which includes Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book. Woodard is joined alongside Donald Glover as the young lion Simba and James Earl Jones who reprises the role of Mufasa, Matthew Broderick as the voice of adult Simba, Joseph Williams doing the singing, Chiwetel Ejiofo as Scar, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, and John Oliver as Zazu.

Jon Favreau directs and re-teams with the studio after The Jungle Book.

The Lion King hits theaters on July 19, 2019.
