‘SUBMERGENCE’ Starring James McAvoy and Alicia Vikander Will Open 2017 Sebastian Film Festival

August 2, 2017

Wim Wenders’ epic romance film SUBMERGENCE starring Alicia Vikander and James McAvoy, will open this year’s 65th San Sebastian Film Festival on September 22.

Submergence is a Germany-France-Spain and US co-production, which will screen at Toronto (TIFF) prior to San Sebastian, and will compete in the Spanish festival’s Official Selection for its top Golden Shell award. The festival also announced that Wenders and Vikander will also attend San Sebastian to present the film.

The films selected to open or close the festival are quite crowd-pleasers. Shot in Berlin, Madrid, Toledo and various locations in France and Djibouti, Submergence was written by Erin Dignam, and based on novel of the same name by journalist J.M Ledgard.

Produced by Lila 9th in the US, the film is co-produced with Newe Road Movies, BacKup Media Studios, Morena Films and Umedia.

McAvoy and Vikander play hydraulic engineeer James More and biomathematician Danielle Flinders, who meet at a remote hotel on the French coast, where both are preparing for dangerous missions.

They fall in love and soon recognize in each other the love of their live. But when they have to separate, we find out that James works for the British Secret Service. While Danielle focuses on a project of immersion in the Greenland Sea, James is taken hostage in Somalia by Jihadist fighters.

San Sebastian Intl. Film Festival runs from Sept. 22-30.
