John Cena Joins Transformers Spinoff ‘BUMBLEBEE’

July 31, 2017

John Cena has joined the upcoming Transformers spinoff, BUMBLEBEE opposite Halee Steinfeld.

Bumblebee will center on the yellow and black bot of the same name. Steinfeld and Cena are joined alongside Jordge Lendeborg, Jason Drucker, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow, Ricardo Hoyos, and Gracie Dzienny.

Bumblebee is set in 1987, where Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.

Travis Knight will direct from a script by Christina Hodson. This is the first spinoff in what the studio hopes to make a Transformers Cinematic Universe that will include prequels and offshots.

Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Michael Bay produce. Steven Spielberg, Brian Goldner and Mark Vahradian and Chris Brigham executive produce.

Production begins today in California.

Bumblebee hits theaters on December 21, 2018.
