As part of the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour, Downton Abbey star Joanne Froggatt, Ioan Gruffudd, and co-creators Harry Williams and Jack Williams spoke with the press to talk about their upcoming show LIAR, coming to Sundance.

Harry said:

“The show is playing with the idea of the lie and the audience’s perception of that. They’re often wrong-footed and we’re not sure where we stand between these two characters. That’s the end game we had in mind when coming up with this show.”

Froggatt revealed the reason why she took this role.

“I like to play flawed people. We’re all flawed to a greater or lesser degree and I always want to do things that are different from the things I’ve done. I loved Anna Bates, she was a lovely character to play for six years.”

Gruffudd, who’s a fan favorite after the short-lived series Forever, also revealed the reason for taking the part.

“He’s an ambiguous character, and there is something behind that veneer that is slight disturbing. This is a part I’ve been itching to play for many, many years. I’ve ever been too young or perceived a certain way. Now I’m in my 40s and mys kin has weathered so I can add a bit more gravitas to this role.”

On when asked if the series could get a second season, Harry revealed that they’re opened to it.

LIAR is a six part mini-series from producers and writers Harry and Jack Williams. It tells the story of a night that changes the lives of Laura Newell (Froggatt) and Andrew Ellis (Gruffudd) forever.

Laura is a smart and dedicated teacher, not long out of a relationship and unsure about getting back on the dating scene. Andrew is a renowned surgeon whose son is a student at Laura’s school. An initial attraction leads to a date, but neither fully realizes the far-reaching consequences that their meeting will have on each other or their families. Truth and consequences go hand in hand in a tense and gripping thriller that examines both sides of a relationship and both sides of the truth. Are there really two sides to every story?

LIAR explores the devastating cost of deceit on both the couple and their friends and family, as secrets and lies are laid bare.

The Williams brothers produce via their Two Brothers Pictures banner alongside director James Strong, who also executive produces.

Eliza Mellor produces. Sam Donovan will direct episodes 4 to 6.

LIAR premieres on Wednesday, Sept. 27.
