James Cameron Wants to Make a New TERMINATOR Trilogy

July 26, 2017

Avatar director James Cameron wants to continue with the Terminator franchise by creating a new trilogy. Cameron spoke with and spoke about the franchise’s relevance in a world where technology has evolved and has now catched up to the sci-fi films of the past.

“The question is– has the franchise run its course or can it be freshened up? So I am in discussions with David Ellison, who is the current rights holder globally for the TERMINATOR franchise and the rights in the US market revert to me under US copyright law in a year and a half, so he and I are talking about what we can do. Right now we are leaning toward doing a three-film arc and reinventing it.”

Cameron will regain the rights to Terminator in 2019 and previously announced that a new film was in the works and even having Arnold Schwarzenegger involved. However, there’s no word to confirm that.

Cameron previously sold the rights to the original film to producer Gale Anne Hurd, with the agreement that he would direct The Terminator, starring Schwarzenegger. The first film earned $78.4 million worldwide and had a sequel, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, which grossed $519.8 million worldwide. Cameron stepped away and the last film made was Terminator Genisys which earned $440.6 million globally on a $155 million budget.
