‘SHAZAM’ Eyes For a 2019 Release Date

July 20, 2017

DC Films has already announced that their next film to start shooting is SHAZAM.

Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg directs from a script by Darren Lemke. Peter Safran produces. Shazam previously had an April 5, 2019 release date, but it remains to be seen if it will continue to stay on that date.

Dwayne Johnson will not appear as the villain Black Adam in the film and is developing a solo film for the anti-hero as a separate project. Without Black Adam, the most well known villain, there aren’t many villains left for Shazam to fight. One potential replacement could be Doctor Sivana, who made his debut with the hero in Whiz Comics #2 in 1940.

As for the rest of the DC Films slate, cameras are currently underway with Aquaman, Justice League is in post-production but doing re-shoots (with new director Joss Whedon). Whedon is also developing Batgirl as a film. Currently under the development phase are The Batman, sequels to Wonder Woman and Suicide Squad, as well as Gotham City Sirens.

Created in 1939 by artist C.C. Beck and writer Bill Parker, Shazam first appeared in Fawcett Comics’ Whiz Comics #2. By saying the word “Shazam” , teenager Bill Batson is trasnformers into the world’s mightiest mortal and given extraordinary abilities by ancient gods. Originally known as Captain Marvel, but due to legal disputes between DC and Marvel comics over the decades, the hero’s name was changed in 2011.
