STARZ has announced that they’re developing a drama series based on the life of singer Mariah Carey. While the scripted drama is yet to be titled, it will be executive produced by Carey and Brett Ratner. Nina Colman will write. The series is reportedly set in 1986 New York City and will tell the story of a bi-racial 16-year-old girl who rises to fame to become the biggest selling female musical artist of all time.

Colman will serve as showrunner and will also executive produce. Stella Bulochnikov will executive produce for Magic Carpet Productions, as well as Teri Weinberg and John Cheng. Carey did a docu-series called Mariah’s World, which she also executive produced for E!

Carey began her musical career with songs like “I Don’t Wanna Cry”, “Emotions” “Visions of Love” and “Someday.” She is known for her high register whistle voice. The pop star will return to Las Vegas for more of her residency and will tour in North America with Lionel Richie. She starred in the critically acclaimed film Glitter in 2001. She voiced Mayor McCaskill in The LEGO Batman Movie, and appears as herself in You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, Lee Daniel’s The Butler, Pop Star: Never Stopping (as herself) and playyed Kitty in FOX’s TV series Empire. She’s set to appear next as herself in the upcoming film Girls Trip starring Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith and Mike Coulter. It hits theaters on July 21.
