Moonlight star Mahershala Ali is eyeing to lead HBO’s upcoming series TRUE DETECTIVE season 3. Though the studio has yet to give an official green light, for Ali it would mark a reunion as he previously starred on Treme.

The first two seasons were high in ratings, but the second season had trouble following the critical acclaim of season 1. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson starred on the first season. McConaughey has expressed interest in reprising his role. However, Pizzolatto is under contract with HBO through 2018 and is developnig a Perry Mason series with Robert Downey Jr.

Season 2 starred Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch.

In addition to winning Best Supporting Actor for his role in Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight, he’s also known for his role on Netflix’s House of Cards and Marvel’s Luke Cage.  Ali will be seen next in Robert Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel, and the long-gestating project, J.C Chandor’s Triple Frontier.
