AMC theaters will be released the classic Terminator 2: Judgment Day in theaters in a 3D conversion supervised by director James Cameron. A trailer has been released and Cameron talks about the post conversion.

Produced by Carolco Pictures and originally released by TriStar Pictures, the film picks up in 1995– 11 years after the original Terminator– with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s T-800 reprogrammed to go back in time and protect a young John Connor (Edward Furlong) and his mom Sarah (Linda Hamilton) from an advanced prototype Terminator known as the T-1000 (Robert Patrick).

Upon its release, T2 was the most expensive movie ever made at $102 million ($180 million adjusted for inflation) and opened ways for computer-generated imagery with the CG-enhanced liquid metal T-1000. The film grossed nearly $520 million dollars at the worldwide box office, won four technical Oscar, and was followed by three sequels (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Terminator Salvation and Terminator Genisys).

The cast of T2 (Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Edward Furlong and Robert Patrick) were reunited in 1996 for the 12-minute long Universal Studios attraction T2 3D: Battle Across Time, which Cameron co-directed with effects men John Bruno and Stan Winston.

Cameron has also slated to revive the franchise in some capacity in 2019 with Deadpool director Tim Miller and David Ellison of Skydance. The creator of the franchise, Cameron will act as a “godfather” to the new film though it remains to be seen if it will be another reboot or a continuation of any of the previous films.
