Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema has announced that they are developing THE CONJURING 3 to continue with their cinematic universe. James Wan will return as producer alongside David Leslie Johnson to write. Wan is not expected to direct, but will be joined alongside producer Peter Safran. The Conjuring follows real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga).

Safran recently told Cinemablend about the upcoming third film that it would break the pattern of “another supernatural possession in a house with a family in peril”. Wan has also stated multiple times that the next film would take place in the 1980s.

Back in 2013 when MTV spoke to Lorraine Warren, she said that England was a possible setting for a sequel (and that came true), as well as another fascinating investigation she and Ed conducted in Japan.

“When we were in Japan investigating hauntings my husband’s health was very bad. I really didn’t know how bad it was until we got home. He would stay in a hotel and I would go with these Japanese people to these hauntings that were going on. Don’t ask me how I do it because I don’t know, I don’t have the answers, but I could communicate. I don’t speak the language. I did not have a translator! Even Ed would say, ‘I don’t know how you were able to do that.'”

The Conjuring has already had several spinoff films, including the in-development Crooked Man, director Corin Hardy’s currently shooting The Nun with Taissa Farmiga and Demian Bichir, and the Annabelle films. The prequel, Annabelle: Creation hits theaters on August 11. So far, The Conjuring films and the first Annabelle film have already earned a combined $895 million worldwide with a combined budget of $66.5 million across the three films.
