Following the departure of directors duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller for the upcoming HAN SOLO Star Wars spinoff, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy cited “creative differences”. She also noted that “a new director will be announced soon.”

Now, Deadline has reported possible frontrunners which could be Ron Howard. Howard is attached to projects that are currently in development, but isn’t filming anything at the moment. In addition, Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote the script for the film with his son Jake, could also be a potential replacement.

Meanwhile, THR also notes that Joe Johnston of The Rocketeer and Jumanji is another name on the list. Johnston began his career working on the first Star Wars film and worked the visual effects of every chapter in the original trilogy.

It remains to be seen who will be announced as the new director as production has only three weeks left. Lucasfilm hasn’t announced any date changes of release. It still remains on the May 25, 2018 release date.

The film is set to focus on how a young Han became the smuggler, thief and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley. It has been confirmed that the film will span a seven-year stretch, covering Han’s life from 18 to 24, showcasing how Han came into possession of the Millennium Falcon and how he first met Chewbacca.

Starring Alden Ehrenreich as Han, Donald Glover as a young Lando Calrissian, and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. Woody Harrelson as Beckett, Han’s mentor, with Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, Michael K. Williams and Phoebe Waller-Bridge in mystery roles.
