Sean Bean Joins ‘MEDICI’ Season 2

June 16, 2017

Sean Bean has joined Italy-set period drama MEDICI: MASTERS OF FLORENCE Season 2.  Jon Cassar (24) has joined as show runner.

Cassar will direct and produce four of the eight episodes of the new season, who first season starred Dustin Hoffman and was a hit for RAI 1 in Italy, notably among young viewers. Frank Spotnitz returns and executive produces.

Bean will play poker-face scheming aristocrat Jacopo Pazzi, which will be likely called “Medici: Lorenzo the Magnificent”. It will be co-produced by Italy’s Luz Vide, public broadcaster RAI, and Spotnitz’s company Big Light.

The second season has a €24 million ($27 million) budget, placing it firmly in the ranks of high-end TV drama. Set in 15th century Florence, it follows the Medici banking dynasty. In the first season, Hoffman played the family patriarch and Richard Madden as his son Cosimo. The new season is set 20 years later, with the producers currently in talks with Madden to appear in flashback scenes.

Netflix has the rights to the new season in the US, UK, Canada, India and Taiwan, where it’s labeled as a “Netflix Original.”

Production begins in August across locations in Italy, and wraps by year’s end for a 2018 premiere.
