Julia Roberts in Talks For Sam Esmail’s Drama Series ‘HOMECOMING’

June 5, 2017

Julia Roberts is in talks to lead HOMECOMING, a high-profile drama series in the works at Universal Cable Productions with Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail.

HOMECOMING is based on Gimlet Media’s breakout fictional podcast of the same name, which was released in November. It instantly became a hot product pursued by several top film and TV producers and studios. However, UCP landed the rights in December in a very competitive situations for Esmail to develop the series via his overall deal there. This shouldn’t be a surprise as Anonymous Content produces his hit award winning series Mr. Robot with UCP, who also joined to produce.

Written by the podcast’s original writers, HOMECOMING is a political thriller that centers on a caseworker at a secret government facility, her supervisor and a soldier. Roberts is in talks to play the supervisor.

Presented in a collage of telephone calls, therapy sessions and overheard conversations, the podcast was led by Catherine Keener and also included Oscar Isaac, David Schwimmer, Amy Sedaris and David Cross. Keener voiced the caseworker, with Schwimmer as her ambitious supervisor and Isaac as a soldier desperate to rejoin civilian life.

The TV series version will be produced by Email through his production company Esmail Corp, alongside Mr. Robot executive producer Chad Hamilton of Anonymous Content, Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg (creators of the podcast), Alicia Van Couvering and Chris Giliberti, Alex Blumberg and Matt Lieber of Gimlet Media.

Roberts will also lead and executive produce Annapurna Television’s upcoming limited series Today Will Be Different, which will be developed at HBO.
