Universal Pictures will be releasing their remake of The Mummy on June 9 to start their interconnected series of films revolving around their stable of classic monsters. According to THRrumors are going around again that Dwayne Johnson will play The Wolfman and Angelina Jolie will play the Bride of Frankenstein in the Dark Universe.

None of the two actors have joined the projects, but they have been closed or have worked with the studios. The studio green lighted Jolie’s 2015 film By the Sea in favor for her to play the titular Bride. While Johnson was part of the previous Mummy franchise, launching his acting career in 2001’s The Mummy Returns and 2002’s The Scorpion King.

Lon Chaney Jr. played the original role of Larry Talbot/The Wolfman in 1941 and went on to reprise the role in the four sequels, with Benicio Del Toro recently playing the role in the 2010 version The Wolfman. Elsa Manchester played the dual role of author Mary Shelley and the Monster’s mate in the 1935 classic Bride of Frankenstein, with Jennifer Beals playing a new version of the role opposite Sting in 1985’s The Bride.

Blumhouse Productions head Jason Blum will be producing. Whether these upcoming films will feature A-list actors remains to be seen.

Dark Universe began with Alex Kurtzman, who directs and produces The Mummy, the first film which will begin the new classic monster series and is joined alongside producer Chris Morgan. Also joining producer Chris Morgan, Christopher McQuarrie and David Koepp.

It’s already been announced that Bill Condon, who directed Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast, will direct BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN from a script by Koepp. It will be released on Thursday, February 14, 2019.

The actress chosen to lead the film will be announced at a later date. In addition, the studio also confirmed that Johnny Depp and Javier Bardem, who will team up in this summer’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, will star as THE INVISIBLE MAN and FRANKENSTEIN’S MONSTER. They’re joined by Tom Cruise as soldier of fortune Nick Morton and Russell Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll, who leads in The Mummy alongside Sofia Boutella as the title role.

The Dark Universe films will be connected to a mysterious multi-national organization known as Prodigium. Led by the enigmatic and brilliant Dr. Henry Jekyll, Prodigium’s mission is to track, study and– when necessary– destroy evil embodied in the form of monsters in our world. Working outside the aegis of any government, and with practices concealed by millennia of secrecy, Prodigium protects the public from knowledge of the evil that exists just beyond the thin membrane of civilized society and will go to any length to contain it.
