Will Pedro Almodóvar Set to Direct a Netflix Series?

Rumors are that writer-director Pedro Almodóvar is set to direct an upcoming television series for Netflix. If it’s true, this means this marks the first time he would direct a TV series.

However, according to ABC.esAlmodóvar’s production company El Deseo completely denies about the news. Almodóvar has publicly said during times that he’s been approached by several TV companies about doing projects for the small screen and last December he said that he had one project in mind, but no other information was said. Netflix hasn’t said anything yet.

This news comes after the short-lived controversy involving Almodóvar and Netflix which erupted during this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where Almodóvar leaded the jury. At the festival’s opening press conference, Almodóvar spoke in Spanish and certain things were lost in translation, leading to believe that the filmmaker would not consider the two Netflix films (Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories and Bong Joon-Ho’s Okja) for the Palme d’Or because they would not be released in theaters in France.

Almodóvar spoke with IndieWire and said:

“There’s nothing worse than being misunderstood or poorly translated. Not me nor any member in the jury will make any distinction between the two Netflix films and the rest of the films in competition. We’re here to judge artistically the 19 movies that the festival has selected. We have said so before, but I want it to be clear.”
