Netflix has announced that they have cancelled THE GET DOWN after one season. From writer/director Baz Luhrmann, the show has released part two of the first season last month.

Luhrmann posted a letter about the cancellation on his Facebook page.

In the letter, Luhrmann talks about a possible reason the series was cancelled, saying:

“When I was asked to come to the center of THE GET DOWN to help realize it, I had to defer a film directing commitment for at least two years. This exclusivity has understandably becomes a sticking point for Netflix and Sony, who have tremendous partners and supporters of the show. It kills me that I can’t split myself into two and make myself available to both productions… But the simple truth is, I make movies.”

Told through the lives and music of a ragtag crew of South Bronx teens, The Get Down series is a mythic saga of the transformation of 1970s New York City.

Starring Shameik Moore, Justice Smith, Herizen Guardiola, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jaden Smith, Skylan Brooks, Tremaine Brown Jr., Mamoudou Athie, Jimmy Smith, and Giancarlo Esposito.

From Baz Luhrmann and a team of collaborators and executive producer Catherine Martin, legendary MC and executive producer Das, associate producer Grandmaster Flash, Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, co-creator and executive producer Stephen Adly Guirgis; and expert collaborators, including hip-hop historian and supervising producer Nelson George.
