Will Smith Eyes Ang Lee’s ‘GEMINI MAN’

April 26, 2017

Will Smith is in negotiations to lead Ang Lee’s upcoming sci-fi action thriller GEMINI MAN. This Skydance film will be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, and centers on an aging assassin who tried to get out of the business but finds himself in the ultimate battle: fighting his own clone who is 25 years younger than him and at the peak of his abilities.

Pitched by Darren Lemke back in 1997, Gemini Man was originally planned for the late Tony Scott to direct with Don Murphy producing. Then, it was later set to be directed by the late Curtis Hanson, and even Joe Carnahan. David Benioff, Brian Helgeland and Andrew Niccol have all been on the list as writers on the project. Mel Gibson at one point for eyeing to star. A few years ago, Carnahan even uploaded a pitch reel with Jerry Bruckheimer producing, and picturing Clint Eastwood leading.

As you can see the project has been having problems to get made. Rian Johnson’s Looper also dealt with similar plot lines. One of the reasons why Gemini Man has been quite hard to do is because a single actor is intended to play both roles, which means cutting-edge visual effects. After working on Life of Pi, which had heavy FX and pushing technological boundaries with HFR on Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, it seems maybe this project can be made by Lee.

Smith is also currently in talks to play the Genie in Disney’s Aladdin.
