American Beauty and Skyfall Sam Mendes is currently eyeing to direct the upcoming film MY FAVORITE THING IS MONSTERS, based on a graphic novel from Emil Ferris, an illustrator and toy sculptor.  Set at Sony Pictures, Ferris has an MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago. The story is set in Chicago during the late 60s and is about a 10-year-old girl who loves monsters and tries to solve the case of a neighbor who was murdered.

Here’s the official description:

Set against the tumultuous political backdrop of the late 60s Chicago, MY FAVORITE THING IS MONSTERS is the fictional graphic diary of 10-year-old Karen Reyes, filled with B-movie horror and pulp monster magazines iconography. Karen Reyes tries to solve the murder of her enigmatic upstairs neighbor, Anka Silverberg, a holocaust survivor, while the interconnected stories of those around her unfold. When Karen’s investigation take us back to Anka’s life in Nazi Germany, the reader discovers how the personal, the political, the past, and the present converge.

The graphic novel was published by Fantagraphic Press, and was released in February of 2017. Part 2 of the series was released in October.
